Uftring Auto Group Director of Fixed Operations Jon Peters recently appeared on WHOI's Good Company program talking about how to get your car ready for winter. Here are some of the items he discussed. If you need a complete winterization, don't hesitate to click on the service tab above and contact your favorite Uftring Auto Group service department for an appointment.
1. Change Your Oil! Make sure your vehicle is properly lubricated. Don't ignore the 30 and 60,000 mile intervals. Oil thickens in cold weather so visit a technician to make sure it has the right viscosity.
2. Visibility is Key! Windshield wiper blades work for about a year - give or take. Make sure you replace them so you can see properly from November to March when sloppy roads will impair your vision.
3. Does your Battery Work? Make sure you battery works properly and can hold a charge. The connections need to be free of any corrosion.
4. Check Belts and Hoses! Cold weather is brutal on your car's belts and hoses. Even if you have a newer vehicle, they should be checked before winter.
5. Tire Pressue is Important! As we all know, traction in the winter is important. Even if the roads around Peoria are plowed, there is still a layer of slickness that remains - especially if the temperatures are hovering around zero degrees. Proper tire pressure is one way to maintain maximum traction. The air pressure in your tires will drop as it gets colder so pay attention to them every time you get in the car. Keep a tire gauge handy as well.
6. Are Snow Tires Right for You? Talk to your mechanic, service advisor or technician and weigh the options of purchasing dedicated snow tires. It might not be essential in the city of Peoria, but if you live in a more rural area, you might want to give it some thought.
7. Keep 4WD Systems Working! Most people rarely use their 4WD systems. Before winter hits, at least engage the system and make sure it is working properly. Also have anyone who drives the car try it and understand how it works. It could get you out of a tricky situation - but only if it's working!
8. Antifreeze is Crucial! Aim for having a 50-50 mix of antifreeze (coolant) and water inside your radiator. This will prevent the mixture from freezing even at ridiculously cold temperatures. Have your authorized technican or repair shop check the levels and mixture.
9. Be Prepared! If you ever get stranded, make sure you have the following items: a charged cell phone, a blanket or two, extra gloves, boots, and hat, warm clothes, water and food, a scraper, a shovel, a flashlight, washer fluid, jumper cables, tool kit, tire changing equipment.
10. Have an Action Plan! If you are stranded, don't walk too far from your vehicle. Wear layers of clothes. Light your vehicle with flares so you are easily identified as someone in distress.
